Yoga is well known to be beneficial to our health in many ways. With the coming of the colder season, our immune systems become compromised and we become prone to contracting common colds and flu.
Yoga practice helps to strengthen our immune system by
- Reducing stress. Stress affects our immunity negatively by increasing inflammation in the body and decreasing the amount of lymphosites available to fight infections.
- Improving circulation of blood and lymph and overall cardio-vascular health, thus improving the ability to rid the body of toxins.
- Improving digestion and the ability to assimilate nutrients and vitamins from food.
- Improving the quality of sleep
Below is a simplified version of B.K.S. Iyengar’s Immune booster sequence. Included are calming forwardbends with head support, inverted asanas and supported chest – opening poses.
Please note that this sequence is not intended for complete beginners. Please consult qualified Iyengar Yoga teacher if you are unsure if this is for you.
You can adjust the poses by using more support for the head in case of stiff hamstrings, you can raise your feet on a hight in Viparita dandasana, Setu Bandha Sarvangasana and Halasana. You can shorten the timings.
The inverted poses are very beneficial, however please leave them out if you are not used to practicing them regularly or if you suffer from high blood pressure. Do only Viparita Karani as an inversion.
